DUNMOW CARNIVAL - SSE WINS PRIZE FOR BEST FLOAT
The Stop Stansted Expansion float whose theme was “Worth Fighting To Save”
carried off first prize at the Dunmow Carnival on Saturday (17 September)
for the best non-commercial float in the annual parade.
More than 20 children dressed in animal and flower masks rode on the float
which was designed as a country scene to highlight not only the wildlife at
risk but the importance of preserving the environment locally and
globally for future generations. A dozen adults walked alongside, handing
out leaflets calling on the community to become members in support of the
campaign group's efforts to prevent the unsustainable expansion of Stansted
Airport.
The team responsible for designing and making the float was led by Caroline
Barrett, Sarah Cousins, Jackie Deane, Laurie Traquair, Maggie Sutton and her daughters and Toni Piatkowski. It
is the third time that SSE has taken part in the carnival.
Commenting on the success of the SSE float, Campaign Director Carol Barbone
said: “We were bowled over by the tremendous support given to SSE at the
carnival. There was enormous recognition from the community that expansion
on the existing runway - never mind a second runway - would severely
compromise the quality of life in Dunmow as well as further afield. The
determination of local people in opposing BAA's plans so clearly
reinforced by those we met on Saturday is not to be underestimated.”
