'WALKPORT' NOT 'AIRPORT' AT THE 2005 RUNWAY RAMBLE

WHEN

WHERE
Behind 'The Stag' public house, Little Easton, nr. Great Dunmow, Essex. See online map

EVENT
The 4th annual Runway Ramble takes place this Sunday and is to be combined with a Grand Summer Fete during the afternoon whose tongue-in-cheek theme of 'Walkport not Airport' belies a more serious message about the threat posed by the proposed expansion of Stansted Airport.

Local people and rambling enthusiasts from all over the south east will be taking part in the five circular walks of the ramble ranging from two to 20 miles in length.  Afterwards they will be joined at the fete by people from across Herts, Essex and further afield to show the value they place on preserving local countryside and communities for future generations and their opposition to BAA's plans for a second runway.

Organised by campaign group Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE) the event is designed to draw attention to the devastating impact that expansion at Stansted would have.  A second runway, as proposed by the Government's Air Transport White Paper, would increase airport capacity to 82m passengers, more than is currently handled by any other airport in the world.

PICTURE OPPORTUNITIES
Four photocall/interview opportunities are offered to media on the day:

8.45am - 9am:  10-MILE HIKERS DEPART
Three leading members of the SSE campaign (Carol Barbone - Campaign Director; Maggie Sutton - Community Coordinator; Brian Ross - Economics Advisor) will be joining ramblers from far and wide to book into the 'Walkport' at an airport style check-in desk, passing through security screens and waiting in the 'departure lounge' where they will await clearance to depart on their ten mile hike across land threatened by proposals for the expansion of Stansted Airport.

2.50pm - 3pm:  1000 YELLOW SSE BALLOONS RELEASED BY LOCAL MP
SSE Chairman Peter Sanders will be joined by the Rt Hon Sir Alan Haselhurst MP to thank ramblers and welcome visitors to the fete.  At 3pm precisely, Sir Alan, aided by local children, will release 1000 yellow SSE balloons in a race sponsored by those wishing to 'blow away' BAA's expansion plans for Stansted.

3.05pm:  CHECKING IN AT THE WALKPORT
Peter Sanders and Sir Alan Haselhurst will pose for the cameras in the Runway Ramble Walkport (see earlier photo-opportunity above for more info).

3.30pm- 4pm TUG OF WAR
Two pub teams (from The Three Horseshoes, Molehill Green and The Stag, Little Easton) and two SSE teams of volunteers will take part in a tug of war.
