FLYING AND LYING
by Eileen Miles
This government and all governments I've ever known
Want to build an airport on my home
For forty years it's been a fight
And they still don't seem to see the light
A beautiful home, a history 400 years old
With fields and flora and ghosts I'm told
Ducklings, foxes, rabbits and frogs
Walnuts, cherries, pigeons and dogs
All this and more is left to die
Because they say we need to fly.
Just for money, to keep the economy alive
PM's don't care if the world doesn't survive
In the national interest, you must be joking
And now I've really given up hoping
Of electing an intelligent human being
Who'll sit at the top and change the way of seeing
Another environmental disaster in the making
Which leaves me helpless, shaking and quaking.
Hundreds of millions of people will die
As the waters rise because we take to the sky
The global interest means nothing to you
Or indeed the countryside where we grew.
Don't kid yourself this country is green
We are taking the route which is obscene
Man's destruction almost at its height
Crucify this airport and do what's right.
